DUBAI WON THE BID TO HOST #WORLD EXPO 2020

Expos are widely expected to work as economic catalysts as they generate economic benefits for the host country in the form of increased tourism, job opportunities, and hospitality revenues. They also provide financial benefits, both during the run up to the event and after, in terms of large construction activity, and investments from outside the country, among others.

The World Expos, held every five years, is a trade exhibition that attracts millions of visitors to the host country. The Great Exhibition, was held in London in 1851 and was such a success that other nations were encouraged to organize similar events like the Paris Expo in 1889 for which the Eiffel Tower was designed and built.

Each Expo has a universal theme and is held in an area which has been masterminded as a place of exchange and encounter to promote a unique experience for participants and visitors who discover and experiment with the theme.

Shanghai 2010 World Expo helped transform a heavily industrial city-centre area into a thriving cultural and commercial district while also bringing its theme “Better City, Better Life” to the attention of 73 million people.

Today, (27/11/2013 ),Dubai won the right to host the 2020 World Expo, becoming the first city in the Middle Eastern  &  North Africa (Mena) region to host the World Expo, the highly celebrated international exhibition,(the third largest global non-commercial event, following the Olympic Games and the Fifa World Cup) in its more than 150-year history.

Dubai bested competing bids from Izmir, Turkey; Sao Paulo, Brazil; and Yekaterinburg, Russia, after three rounds of voting by delegates of the 168-nation Bureau International des Expositions in Paris.

The announcement comes just days before the Dec. 2 U.A.E. national day, which celebrates the young nation's 42 years of unity and independence from the British Protectorate.

The official Twitter account for Dubai's world expo bid wrote after the announcement that the win "will help unlock the vast potential of this region" and that it is the first World Expo to be held in the Middle East.

"The UAE is proud to have been selected to host #Expo2020 in #Dubai under the theme 'Connecting Minds, Creating the Future'," said Dubai authorities on their official expo bid account.

Winning the expo is also expected to hugely boost Dubai’s economy, with the city estimated to attract over 25 million visitors during the six-month long event.

Dubai was considered a favourite to host the mega event since it announced its bid, with heavyweights such as the UK, Canada, Italy and the Netherlands pledging their support for the emirate.

The next World Expo takes place in Milan, Italy, in 2015. The focus: “Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life”.

Congratulation to Dubai
