Britain's First Ever "Small Business Saturday" has landed 7th December 2013
We’re supporting Small Business Saturday – Are you?
Jazah Group
is delighted to be taking part in the national ‘Small
Business Saturday’ campaign,
supported by the Department for Business Innovation and Skills.
What is Small Business Saturday?
There has been much talk
over the past months of introducing a Small Business Saturday to the UK. For
those of you who have not heard, Small Business Saturday UK is Britain’s first-ever grassroots campaign encouraging people to shop in their local and independent
retailers and use local services, as
opposed to chain brands on December 7th
and beyond.Today,(7th Saturday, 2013) is the day to take part in.
What’s the BIG idea?
The initiative started in United
States in 2010, and generated around $5.5 billion sales in 2012. Now it has
been introduced into the UK, to support those small businesses which are the
lifeblood of our economy. The UK version is the
brainchild of the Shadow Business Secretary, Labour MP Chuka Umunna. But,
Prime Minister, the government and all the major political parties are
endorsing the day. Plus, business champions like James Caan, Piers Linney and
Martha Lane Fox have all voiced their support via social media
Small businesses and entrepreneurs are
providing the energy and ideas that the country needs. They are the central to
the character of our communities. They make each town and village unique. They
are a powerful driver to help people get on, meet their aspirations, be their
own boss.”
Small firms also provide
two-thirds of private sector jobs and are responsible for
almost half of the private sector’s turnover. Small Business Saturday’s
supporters include Piers Linney and James Caan of Dragons’ Den, Karren Brady
from The Apprentice and TV’s Queen of Shops Mary Portas, along with the
Federation of Small Businesses, the British Chambers of Commerce and the
Association of Convenience Stores.
Small Business Saturday is a
great chance for small businesses to promote themselves and generate trade. There
are 4.8 million small businesses in the UK and over 14 million people work in
them; it’s time that people recognized the importance our small businesses
represent to local economies.
Small business organisations,
local authorities, community groups, big businesses, banks, accountants and
others are getting involved too. They’re promoting the day locally, to their
members, customers and supply chains.
